Conwy duo honoured in King’s Birthday Honours list

Two people from Conwy who have dedicated their lives to helping others have been recognised in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List 2026.

Among the 84 people from Wales honoured this year are Karl Lester and Alys Cole-King, both from Conwy, who have been awarded MBEs for their outstanding contributions to public service and community wellbeing.

Karl Lester receives an MBE for voluntary services to Mountain Rescue. Since 2008, he has played a vital role in more than 555 rescue operations, helping people in difficulty across some of Wales’ most challenging landscapes. His honour recognises years of commitment to keeping walkers, climbers and visitors safe in the mountains and countryside of North Wales.

Also receiving an MBE is Alys Cole-King for services to suicide prevention. Her work has helped transform professional responses to people experiencing suicidal crises, promoting compassionate and evidence-based approaches to care. Her efforts have influenced mental health support and suicide prevention practices across the UK and beyond.

The pair are among a number of Welsh recipients recognised for making a positive difference in their communities.

Elsewhere in Wales, Julia Jones, from Dyfed, receives a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to music after establishing the Llandeilo Fawr Festival of Music. Christina Roy, from Cardiff, is awarded a BEM for her work supporting families and helping women into employment through community learning programmes.

In Swansea, jazz champion David Cottle receives a BEM for services to music, while Gary Davies, from Mid Glamorgan, is awarded an MBE for services to public safety after nearly 50 years of public service.

The King’s Birthday Honours List 2026 recognises 1,182 people from across the United Kingdom for exceptional achievements and service, with a particular focus on individuals making a lasting difference in their communities.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the honours recognise people who are “quietly changing lives and strengthening their communities”, while Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens praised the Welsh recipients for their contributions to charity, sport, public service, the arts and community life.

For North Wales, the recognition of Karl Lester and Alys Cole-King shines a spotlight on two individuals whose dedication has helped save lives and support some of the most vulnerable members of society.
