Extravaganza success sparks welcome Christmas comeback

The streets of Llandudno have once again echoed with the sights and sounds of a bygone age, as this year’s Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza drew crowds back in time for one of North Wales’ most cherished traditions.

For a few magical days over the May Bank Holiday, the seaside town transformed into a living Victorian postcard. Brass bands marched, steam engines rolled through the streets, and performers in period costume entertained thousands of visitors who lined the promenade and packed into Mostyn Street.

From vintage fairground rides to bustling street markets, the extravaganza once again delivered the colour, charm and nostalgia that has defined it for generations.

But beyond the spectacle, the event carries a deeper story — one rooted in the town’s very identity.

First launched in 1986, the extravaganza was created to celebrate Llandudno’s Victorian heritage and, crucially, to boost tourism at a key point in the calendar.   What began as a local initiative quickly grew into one of the biggest events in the town’s year, attracting tens of thousands of visitors and supporting local businesses across the resort.

That Victorian heritage still shapes Llandudno today — from its grand promenade to its historic pier — and the extravaganza has become a living tribute to the era that turned the town into one of Britain’s favourite seaside destinations.

This year’s event was no exception. Social media has been filled with images capturing the atmosphere — smiling crowds, colourful performers, and the unmistakable joy of a town celebrating its past while bringing people together in the present.

And as the final rides packed away and the last notes of music faded, organisers had one more surprise.

In a post shared after the event, they confirmed that another much-loved tradition is set to return. The Llandudno Christmas Extravaganza will be back this year, running from 19th to 22nd November — marking a long-awaited revival after several years away.

The announcement has already sparked excitement among locals and visitors alike, promising a festive counterpart to the springtime spectacle that has become such an important part of the town’s tourism calendar.

For Llandudno, events like the Victorian Extravaganza are more than just entertainment. They are part of the town’s lifeblood — celebrating its heritage, driving visitors to its streets, and creating memories that stretch across generations.

And now, with the return of its Christmas celebration confirmed, it seems the town’s tradition of turning back the clock — and drawing crowds — is only set to grow stronger.
