A new partnership aimed at developing the next generation of football talent in North Wales has been launched by Colwyn Bay FC and Coleg Llandrillo.
The Coleg Llandrillo Football Academy will officially be unveiled at a community open event in Rhos-on-Sea on 9 May, with enrolment now open for students starting in September 2026.
The academy is open to male players aged 16 to 19, regardless of previous club experience, with plans already in place to introduce a dedicated female pathway for the 2027–28 academic year.
Designed to combine education with elite-level football training, the programme offers a structured route for young players to develop both academically and athletically. Students will work towards recognised qualifications while gaining access to high-quality coaching, competitive matches, and a professional-style training environment.
Mike Wilde, Director of Football at Colwyn Bay FC, said the partnership will deliver a “comprehensive package” including strength and conditioning, performance analysis and top-class facilities. He added that the link with the club will give players valuable exposure to senior football and real-world pathways into the game.
Prospective students and their families will be able to find out more at the open event, where they can meet coaching staff, tour the facilities and explore the opportunities available through the academy and its scholarship programme.
Samantha McIlvogue, Assistant Principal at Coleg Llandrillo, described the launch as “a significant step forward for football, sport and education in the region,” highlighting a shared commitment to nurturing local talent.
Amy Thomson, Sport and Public Services Programme Area Manager, said the collaboration creates “a powerful pathway for young talent,” helping to inspire the next generation both on and off the pitch.
Applications for the new academy are now open, marking the start of what both organisations hope will become a key development route for aspiring footballers across North Wales.
