Partnership gives emergency doctors faster access to patients

A new partnership between North Wales Emergency Doctor Service (NWEDS) and North Wales Police is set to improve emergency medical response times across the region, thanks to the creation of a dedicated base for a new critical care response vehicle.

The new facility, located at North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit base in Llandegai, will enable NWEDS clinicians to reach critically ill and injured patients more quickly while carrying specialist life-saving equipment directly to emergencies.

NWEDS, which was established in 2010, provides enhanced pre-hospital emergency care through a team of volunteer doctors, paramedics and advanced practitioners. Working alongside the Welsh Ambulance Service and other emergency services, the organisation responds to some of the most serious incidents across North Wales.

The charity-supported service has grown significantly in recent years, and the addition of the new critical care car and dedicated base is being hailed as a major step forward in strengthening emergency care provision in the region.

Dr Bryn Ellis, Clinical Lead and Doctor with NWEDS, said the partnership would support the organisation’s expanding role across North Wales.

“We are delighted to be part of this new partnership with North Wales Police, which provides a new base for our critical care car and supports the growing work of NWEDS across the region,” he said.

“Our volunteer clinicians are committed to delivering enhanced pre-hospital emergency care when every second counts. This vehicle and base will play a vital role in helping us reach patients quickly with the specialist equipment and interventions they need.

“We are incredibly grateful to North Wales Police and the HELP Appeal for supporting this project and helping strengthen our ability to care for people in their most critical moments.”

Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman said the force was pleased to support the service by providing a base for the emergency response vehicle.

“The work carried out by NWEDS doctors is invaluable, delivering advanced medical care in the most challenging circumstances and helping to improve outcomes for people involved in the most serious medical incidents,” she said.

“Having the vehicle based alongside our specialist roads crime and armed alliance resources further strengthens the close partnership between our organisations and demonstrates our shared commitment to keeping the people of North Wales safe.”

NWEDS operates under the governance of BASICS Wales and is affiliated with the organisation BASICS UK. As a charity, it relies heavily on donations and external support to maintain and develop its services.

The new vehicle and base partnership are expected to enhance the organisation’s ability to respond rapidly to life-threatening emergencies across North Wales when every minute matters.
