TrawsCymru expansion promises better buses across Wales

Passengers across Wales will benefit from 30 new buses being added to the TrawsCymru network as part of a major investment aimed at improving connections between communities where rail services are limited.

The expanded fleet was unveiled in Aberystwyth and forms part of the Welsh Government’s plans to create a greener, more accessible and better-connected public transport network.

The modern buses will operate on the TrawsCymru network, which spans 13 routes across Wales and was established in 2012 to provide long-distance public transport links between towns, cities and rural communities.

The investment is expected to strengthen transport links across the country, making it easier for people to access jobs, education, healthcare and leisure opportunities while encouraging more people to switch from private cars to public transport.

Deputy Transport Minister Mark Hooper said transport plays a vital role in supporting economic growth by helping people reach work, education and essential services.

He said: “Simplified fares, more frequent services, connectivity with other bus services and newer vehicles are all part of this service.

“I am really excited to be building on Wales’ existing transport connections with a fleet of new, modern, accessible vehicles designed for comfort and sustainability and I look forward to seeing Welsh communities benefit from these enhanced services.”

The announcement is particularly significant for rural areas of North Wales, Mid Wales and West Wales, where buses often provide a crucial transport link for communities not served directly by the rail network.

Lee Robinson, Executive Director for Regional Transport and Integration at Transport for Wales, said the new vehicles would deliver more comfortable journeys while helping improve access to essential services.

“TrawsCymru services are vital for communities across Wales, and we’re pleased to introduce these new buses to the network,” he said.

“They will deliver more comfortable, higher-quality journeys for our customers, while supporting a shift from private car use to public transport.

“Crucially, they will also help strengthen access to essential services, including healthcare, education, leisure and employment, opening up greater opportunities for communities across the country.”

The new buses also support efforts to modernise Wales’ ageing bus fleet, which is currently the oldest in the UK, while helping reduce congestion and carbon emissions.
