A children’s nurse from Anglesey is taking on an inspiring series of fitness challenges this year to raise vital funds for one of North Wales’ most cherished charities.
Jessica Roberts, a fully qualified children’s nurse, has set herself the goal of completing four demanding fundraising challenges in support of Hope House Children’s Hospices and its North Wales hospice, TÅ· Gobaith Children’s Hospice.
Jess was first inspired by the hospice while training to become a nurse more than a decade ago, when she spent time on placement there.
“It is such a wonderful place for children and their families,” she said. “It has a very homely feel and each child has individualised, quality care. Families can feel completely safe and cared for in the best possible way.”
Jess has already completed her first challenge – a Valentine’s fundraiser walking 14 miles in 14 days – and now has three more events lined up over the coming weeks.
They include the 10-mile Llangollen Canal Walk, the popular She Ultra race in Abersoch, and finishing with the Virtual London Marathon at the end of April.
The 34-year-old mum of two admits the challenges are coming thick and fast, but says the motivation of helping others keeps her going.
“My aim this year is to get fitter and complete these challenges to help others,” she explained. “They’re quite close together which is nerve-racking, but I’ve been making sure to get out every day, rain or shine, to get some miles in.”
Jess says she’s had incredible support from family and friends, including her husband and walking partners who have joined her in all weathers – and many will be there cheering her on when she completes the marathon distance along the coastline of Anglesey.
The charity Jess is supporting provides specialist care and support to children with life-threatening conditions and their families across North Wales and the border counties.
At TÅ· Gobaith Children’s Hospice and its sister hospice Hope House Children’s Hospice, families are offered respite care, medical support, end-of-life care and emotional support in a warm and welcoming environment.
The hospices also provide counselling, play therapy and practical help for parents and siblings, ensuring families are supported at every stage of their journey. For many families across North Wales, TÅ· Gobaith has become a lifeline, helping children live their best lives while creating precious memories together.
Jess will complete the Virtual London Marathon on April 26, taking on the 26.2-mile challenge around the beautiful coastline of Anglesey.
She says keeping a positive mindset has helped her stay focused.
“I’d like to think I’m quite a positive person,” she said. “I just remind myself that it’s all for an amazing cause and to help others – and that always keeps me going.”
Fundraiser Bekki Fardoe from Hope House Children’s Hospices said Jess is an inspiration.
“She’s been a dedicated children’s nurse for more than a decade and is pushing herself for the good of others in her community,” she said. “Every mile run and every pound raised will go straight to helping local children and families living with life-threatening conditions.”
With community support behind her and several challenges still ahead, Jess hopes her efforts will help ensure that children and families across North Wales continue to receive the care, comfort and support that places like TÅ· Gobaith provide every day.
