Bay man disqualified after failing to provide breath test

A man who failed to provide a breath test has been disqualified from driving for 52 months.

Shazad Azam of Lawson Road, Colwyn Bay was sentenced at Llandudno Magistrates Court on Tuesday following his arrest in October last year.

It follows an incident shortly before 11pm on October 3rd when a member of the public had contacted police to report that Azam had been witnessed drinking alcohol whilst behind the wheel of his car in Colwyn Bay. A short time later officers tracked down Azam and he was stopped in his vehicle on Foryd Road in Kinmel Bay.

Azam was arrested for offences including failing to co-operate with the preliminary roadside breath test (and later refused to provide in custody) and racially aggravated public order.

He was charged and appeared before Llandudno Magistrates this week.

He was disqualified from driving for a total of 52 months, fined £270, ordered to pay £650 in costs and £114 victim surcharge.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "The biggest risk you take when driving whilst under the influence of alcohol is the risk of causing a collision.

"Getting behind the wheel of your car having consumed alcohol not only puts your life at risk but also the lives of other road users. Drink driving ruins the lives of individuals and communities and it is completely avoidable.
