North Wales BikeSafe has supported North Wales Police’s campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team has distributed more 1,500 leaflets to 21 food banks across North Wales, including Colwyn Bay, Wrexham, Abergele, Kinmel Bay, Ruthin, Denbigh, Rhyl, Prestatyn, Mold, Barmouth and Anglesey.

This campaign provides information about staying safe from domestic abuse where people are unable to leave their homes but need help.

A rural domestic abuse report in 2019 showed that urban and rural communities are unable to access support services and information as easily as towns and cities.

BikeSafe has supported the region- wide efforts to proactively provide information in communities where domestic abuse is known to happen and raise awareness that the police are there to help.

BikeSafe’s lead on this for North Wales, Kevin Shenton said “I felt privileged to be asked to support such an important campaign across North Wales on an issue which affects so many people’s lives.

“Along with six other BikeSafe observers we are proud to have worked closely with NWP’s Strategic Protection of Vulnerable Persons Unit and the Citizens in Policing team for Humanitarian Assistance at NWP in trying to make a difference in our communities, keeping people safe.”

North Wales Police are committed to protecting the lives of adult and child victims of domestic abuse, to investigate all reports and to bring offenders to justice.

BikeSafe is a national police-run motorcycle initiative aimed at working with motorcycle riders in a relaxed environment to raise awareness of the importance and value of progressing on to accredited post-test training. Further information is available via their website.
