Colwyn Bay FC has confirmed plans to launch an FAW-accredited National Academi from the 2026/27 season, marking a major step forward in the club’s long-term development strategy.
The new academy structure, overseen by Director of Football Mike Wilde, will initially feature teams at Under 13, Under 15, Under 16, Under 19 and reserve level. The club says there is a clear strategic plan to expand the programme in the coming years, creating a full academy system that will sit alongside its growing grassroots junior section.
The academi will operate under the standards set by the Football Association of Wales, ensuring high-quality coaching, welfare provision and player development pathways.
Open trials for the new age groups will be held during the Easter half-term, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. Players can already register their interest via the club’s online form.
Speaking about the launch, Mike Wilde said:
“The launching of the club’s academy is the next stage of our strategic development plan, allowing us to further strengthen a development pathway for players not just for the club, but for Welsh football in general.
“The club is carrying a lot of momentum currently both on and off the pitch, and it’s important that we continue to build on the solid foundations which are currently being laid.
“This is an important piece of the jigsaw, and I look forward to revealing further information ahead of our Easter trial dates in the coming weeks.”
For years, talented young players in North Wales have often had to travel long distances to access elite development opportunities. Colwyn Bay’s new academi aims to provide a clear, high-standard pathway closer to home — giving local youngsters the chance to progress from grassroots football into senior competition without leaving the region prematurely.
Colwyn Bay FC has steadily expanded its community footprint in recent seasons, increasing participation across its junior section and working closely with local schools and youth programmes. The club runs holiday camps, development sessions and community engagement initiatives, positioning itself as a hub for football in the Colwyn Bay area.
The creation of a formal academi builds on that work, offering a structured route from mini and junior football through to the reserves and first team.
The announcement comes at a time when the club has been enjoying renewed energy both competitively and organisationally. Recent months have seen positive performances on the field and growing support off it, helping to stabilise and strengthen the club’s long-term vision.
By introducing an FAW-accredited academi, Colwyn Bay FC is signalling its intent to invest in homegrown talent and secure a sustainable future built on North Wales players.
Further details on trial dates and academy plans are expected ahead of Easter.
