Residents and shopkeepers in Colwyn Bay have been buoyed by the news that the town's clock at the bottom of Station Road has returned.
As a symbol of positivity for the town and a much loved commerative landmark, the Andrew Fraser Memorial Clock has had pride of place at the bottom of Station Road since 1989.
However it has been noticeably absent from the town since it was removed for restoration work in Autumn of 2018. It was expected that the clock would be absent for a short while but it was revealed that much more funding was required to complete the work. Sadly the pandemic slowed down the work even further.
Thanks to support from the local community and the Colwyn Town Council, funds to replace the inner workings of the clock have been acheived and work has been going on this week to get the clock back in its rightful place.
Former Mayor of Colwyn and Bayside presenter Jeff Pearson said, "I've been asked by so many people when the clock is coming back and I'm delighted to say that we can all look forward to hearing chimes and music once again on Station Road. "It has been such an important part of the town's heritage and a lovely feature of Station Road."
"It's return is the perfect way to welcome in spring and hopefully a more optimistic future as we eventually emerge out of lockdown."
The memorial clock was presented to Colwyn Bay town in 1989 by the parents of Andrew Fraser – in memory of their son Andrew who was born in the town and who died in Brussels in 1950 at age 33.
He was a talented musician and to remember him the clock was designed to play the music he loved not only on his birthday but at Christmas time too.
Festive tunes played by the clock have become part of the tradition of Christmas and one that many local people have missed.
