Housing improvements and occupational therapy staff in the county have been working hard to reduce the time it takes to get a Disabled Facilities Grant.

A Disabled Facilities Grant is a type of financial assistance used to help with adapting the home.

If you have a disability an adaptation is an alteration or piece of equipment that makes it easier and safer for you to stay in your home. These adaptations vary according to the needs of the person.

In Conwy, the latest figures show a year-on-year decrease in the amount of time taken to get a Disabled Facilities Grant.

And in 2018/19, it took just 126 days to get a Disabled Facilities Grant compared to the Welsh average of 207 days.

A Disabled Facilities Grant funded work to refurbish the bathroom, install a through-floor lift, widen internal doors and improve the footpath to the front door for Carol Roberts in Dwygyfylchi.  

She said: “It has improved my quality of life by making my day-to-day tasks much easier, maintaining my independence, which is very important to me.” 

“This work to my home allowed me to sit in the garden, and attend my son’s wedding and go out for Sunday lunches, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. I look forward to going out more often.”

Cllr Charlie McCoubrey, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Housing said, “I’m delighted that Conwy is the number one performing local authority in Wales.”

“Helping people to live independently is a Council priority, and by arranging for homes to be adapted we can help people stay in their own home and keep their independence for longer – it makes a real difference to people’s lives.”
