Couple put their best foot forward for local hospice care

Stephen and Sam McElroy from Llandudno laced up their walking boots and put their best foot forward to help raise funds for St David’s Hospice.

Walking part of the Offa’s Dyke path along the English-Welsh border they completed a total of 67 miles on foot. Heading north from Welshpool, Powys to Bodfari in Denbighshire they walked the route in four days.

Sales Director Stephen, 49, said: “The walk was very challenging and also very enjoyable. It was my wife Sam’s idea. We both do local walks around Betws and Llyn Elsi but nothing like this before.

“The biggest walk we’ve ever done is 6 miles, this was 17 miles a day. The scenic aspect was fantastic, we rarely saw anyone. It almost felt as if we were on our own.

We’d definitely do it again, walking another part of the path and glad to help St David’s Hospice with the fantastic care they give in the community.”

The walk was in aid of St David’s Hospice, a local charity providing free care and support to people across the counties of Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey who are affected by life-limiting illnesses.

Annually it costs over £6 million to run St David’s Hospice and only a small percentage is received from the Welsh Government and Local Health Board. Over 90% of our income is generated through community fundraising such as Stephen and Sam’s sponsored walk.

The couple raised £751.25 through their sponsorship page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/stephenandsammcelroy

James Wilde, Conwy Area Fundraiser congratulated Stephen and Sam on their achievement: “Well done to Stephen and Sam, it sounds like a really challenging walk and one to be extremely proud of completing.

“The pictures look great and I’d like to thank both for their fundraising which will be a big support to both patients and their families at St David’s Hospice.”
