Drug driving slammed by Police as Colwyn Bay man charged

A man has been disqualified from driving for 48 months and given a 16-week suspended sentence for 18 months after being convicted of drug driving.

32-year-old Nicholas Karl Highton of Dundonald Road, Colwyn Bay was first stopped on June 30th shortly before midday and tested positive for both cannabis and cocaine at the roadside.

He was arrested and taken to custody where a further test was carried out before being released under investigation.

During a road safety operation last month he was stopped due to the manner of his driving and refused to take the roadside drugs test. He was arrested and taken to custody where again, he failed to provide an evidential sample.

On Wednesday he appeared before court where he pleaded guilty. As well as the disqualification and sentence, he must also pay £85 costs and £154 surcharge.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "Choosing to drive when impaired by drugs is dangerous and unacceptable.

"We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week and anyone who is considering driving whilst under the influence should know that we will be out and about waiting for them. We'll continue to crack down on those who take this unnecessary risk and bring them before the courts."
