On Monday evening, Gavin Preston successfully completed his final assessment to qualify as an Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) Helm at Llandudno Lifeboat Station. Joined by two fellow crew members, Gavin undertook the assessment under the evaluation of RNLI Coastal Lifeboat Trainer Simon Bunting.

As one of Llandudno’s ILB Helms, Gavin now takes on the critical responsibility of overseeing all operations during lifeboat launches, rescues, and recoveries. The helm's role is to ensure the safety of both the crew and any individuals being rescued, while managing a team of two or three others during a rescue.

The helm is not only responsible for decision-making and leadership but also ensures that each rescue is conducted with maximum efficiency and safety.

The helm passout is a rigorous evaluation, covering essential skills such as briefing and debriefing, search and rescue techniques, man overboard drills, anchoring, towing, command navigation, and teamwork.

Proficiency in communication, situational awareness, and leadership are also key components, all of which Gavin demonstrated to the high standard required.

Reflecting on his accomplishment, Gavin shared, "It’s been a long and demanding process, but it’s all been worth it. I’ve had incredible support from my fellow crew members, other helms, the training team, and the shore crew. I couldn't have done it without them, and I’m grateful for their encouragement every step of the way."

With his new appointment, Gavin is ready to lead his crew and continue Llandudno Lifeboat Station’s proud tradition of saving lives at sea.
