A much-loved fundraising event will return to Llandudno next month, as hundreds of people are expected to take part in St David’s Hospice’s annual Moonlight Walk.

The four-mile walk takes place on Saturday, September 12th, lighting up the town’s promenade as participants make their way around a route which starts and finishes at the hospice’s Abbey Road site on Llandudno’s West Shore.

The event is expected to raise around £10,000 for the hospice, which provides specialist care to people living with advanced illnesses and those approaching the end of their lives, as well as support for their families.

The Moonlight Walk is open to everyone and the route is accessible, with dogs also welcome to take part.

There will be plenty of entertainment along the way, with pop-up performances from groups including Rock Choir and Batala Bangor, helping to create what organisers hope will be a memorable and uplifting evening.

Jade Evans, from the fundraising team at St David’s Hospice, says the event is particularly important at a time when the cost of providing hospice care continues to rise.

She said: “This year it will cost our charity over £5 million to deliver hospice care across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.

“The Moonlight Walk is an important annual event that not only helps to raise funds but also reminds us of the vital work delivered in local communities by our dedicated care team.”

Jade added that the hospice was looking forward to another successful event and thanked everyone supporting the walk, with particular thanks going to Llandudno’s Central Hub, which is sponsoring this year’s event.

Registration is now open, with tickets including refreshments and a T-shirt.

Organisers say every pound raised will go directly towards helping St David’s Hospice patients and their loved ones.

And the need for that support remains significant.

St David’s Hospice cares for more than 1,000 people every year across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey, providing specialist services alongside emotional, physical and spiritual support.

Its services operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, while its Day Therapy Centres provide patient care, bereavement and counselling services. Its inpatient units in Llandudno and Holyhead provide symptom control, respite and end-of-life care.

This year, the hospice says it will cost more than £5.2 million to run its services.

Only around 24% of that comes from the Welsh Government and Local Health Board, meaning the majority of the funding has to be generated through community fundraising and charitable support.

Importantly, none of those costs are passed on to patients, families or carers – St David’s Hospice care is provided free of charge.

For those taking part in the Moonlight Walk, that means an evening stroll along the Llandudno coast can make a very real difference to people and families across North Wales.
