A major emergency response was launched on the Great Orme after a casualty had to be airlifted to safety following an incident on the headland.

Llandudno Coastguard Rescue Team said it was called to the incident on Saturday alongside North Wales Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the Welsh Ambulance Service, the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, Conwy Lifeboat and RNLI Llandudno Lifeboat.

The coastguard team initially prepared to carry out a rope rescue to extract the casualty from the difficult terrain. However, following a medical assessment, it was decided that lifting the casualty by helicopter would be the safest course of action.

The team worked with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Holyhead to request a Coastguard rescue helicopter, which successfully lifted the casualty from the Great Orme.

After being brought to a safe location, the casualty was transferred to a waiting ambulance before being taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital for further treatment. No details about the person’s condition have been released.

Describing the operation, Llandudno Coastguard said it highlighted the importance of close cooperation between the emergency services, with each agency working together to ensure the casualty received the safest possible care.

North Wales Police is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has photographs or video footage, to come forward as soon as possible.

The Great Orme is one of North Wales’ most popular visitor attractions, drawing hundreds of thousands of people each year. While offering spectacular coastal views, its steep cliffs and rugged terrain can present significant challenges for emergency responders when incidents occur, often requiring specialist rope rescue teams or helicopter support to reach casualties safely.
