A 31-year-old man has been charged after a stolen taxi was stopped while travelling in the wrong direction on the A55 in North Wales.

Darragh O’Grady, who is of no fixed abode but is understood to be from Ireland, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, aggravated taking of a vehicle and a number of other driving offences.

He also faces charges including theft and fraud by false representation.

Police were called after a taxi was reported stolen from Holyhead on Monday, August 24.

The vehicle was subsequently involved in a collision with a cyclist on London Road before entering the A55 westbound carriageway travelling in the wrong direction.

Officers closed the road and were able to safely stop the vehicle on the A55.

O’Grady was arrested and has since been remanded in custody. He is due to appear before Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday, August 27.

North Wales Police has also addressed speculation surrounding the incident, saying there is currently no evidence to suggest the events of Monday evening were deliberately filmed for the purpose of uploading footage to social media.

Police have urged people not to speculate about the circumstances or the motivations behind what happened while the investigation remains ongoing.

A North Wales Police spokesperson said the investigation was still active and appealed to anyone with information which could assist officers to come forward.
