Memorial Fund launched to support brain cancer patients

A new memorial fund has been launched to help brain cancer patients and their families across North Wales, in memory of Angela Mary Bennett.

The Angela Mary Bennett Memorial Fund has been set up through Awyr Las, the NHS Charity for North Wales. It will help families facing the financial strain of travelling and staying away from home when loved ones are receiving specialist treatment outside the region.

Angela passed away in March 2023 at the age of 47, just nine weeks after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. Her family have created the fund to ensure others facing similar circumstances are supported during what can be an overwhelming and costly time.

Many patients from North Wales requiring specialist neuro-oncology treatment are cared for at centres outside the region, including The Walton Centre in Liverpool. Regular travel, parking and accommodation costs can quickly add up for families determined to remain by a loved one’s side.

Nick Bennett, Angela’s brother, said: “When we heard of Angela’s diagnosis we rallied and my brother Chris and I were able to make sure my mum visited her in Walton every day. We don’t want anyone without a support network not to be able to do the same.”

As well as supporting travel and accommodation costs, the fund will also help enhance local care in North Wales hospitals by contributing towards additional equipment and complementary services.

Dyfed Jones, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “It can be difficult and costly for families to have to travel to visit their loved ones receiving care outside of North Wales. This new fund in memory of Angela will support the travel and accommodation costs for families at a time of need, going above and beyond what can ordinarily be offered by the NHS.

“We are incredibly grateful to the family for such a generous contribution in memory of Angela. The funds received will go a long way to making a difference for brain cancer sufferers and their families.”

To raise money for the fund, Nick and his three adult children will run the Anglesey 10k on 1 March 2026, around the time of what would have been Angela’s 50th birthday.

Donations to the Angela Mary Bennett Memorial Fund can be made through Awyr Las, the North Wales NHS Charity, and via the fund’s JustGiving campaign page.
