Aberconwy MS Janet Finch-Saunders is supporting the campaign led by the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce on Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Day.
The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy expressed her hope that the day would raise more awareness of the symptoms of these deadly cancers, and for anyone to seek medical help at the earliest opportunity if they recognise any of the signs.
Today (January 11th) is Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Day, run by the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce. The day aims to raise the profile of these six cancers, to raise awareness of symptoms and to highlight the critical importance of early diagnosis in improving survival.
The six less survivable cancers are cancers of the lung, pancreas, liver, brain, oesophagus and stomach.
More than 4,400 people will be diagnosed each year in Wales with one of these 6 cancers and, because of the short prognosis, they make up over 40% of all deaths from cancer each year.
Speaking today, Janet said: “These cancers simply have not seen the improvements in outcomes that have been made in other cancer areas in recent decades.
“Less survivable cancers are difficult to diagnose, with vague or non-specific symptoms. We need to raise awareness of less survivable cancers and their symptoms with the public, encouraging people to see their GP if they have worrying symptoms.
“We need to do everything we can to raise awareness of these Less Survivable Cancers, to ensure and earlier and faster diagnosis.
“The Welsh Government must also ensure that Less Survivable Cancers are prioritised in the Wales Cancer Services Action Plan”.
