New certificates to acknowledge baby loss in Wales

Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed the Welsh Government’s announcement that Baby Loss Certificates will be available to those who experience baby loss before 24 weeks of pregnancy.

The Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing announced earlier this week that bereaved parents will be able to apply for certificates from 2026.

While Baby Loss Certificates have been available in England since February 2024, and those affected in Scotland are able to record a loss in the national Memorial Book of Pregnancy, Wales does not yet have a similar scheme in place.

The announcement comes during Baby Loss Awareness Week, an annual campaign to raise awareness of baby loss and to support those affected by it.

Darren has campaigned for the introduction of Baby Loss Certificates in Wales and previously welcomed the Welsh Government’s commitment to exploring the scheme last year. Darren is therefore delighted that plans have now been formally announced.

Mr. Millar said: “I’ve been campaigning for Baby Loss Certificates to be introduced in Wales for some time now, so this is a very welcome announcement.

“Certificates have been available in England for nearly two years now and it’s about time that bereaved parents in Wales are afforded the same right as those across the border.

“This simple but meaningful certificate will help many grieving parents by formally acknowledging their loss and I trust that work to implement this scheme will now proceed swiftly.”
