Plans for 'Conwy Castle' Co-Operative store withdrawn

Bayside has learnt that plans to build a new Co-Operative store in Conwy have been withdrawn.

We reported in February that proposals to open a new store in close promixity to Conwy Castle was a matter that created much debate in the local community.

As discussed in length, the company proposed building one of its new shops on the land which for many years was Billington Garage.

Many residents were furious about the state of the property once the garage closed back in 2007 and it remained a derelict eyesore for many years.

Plans to revitalise the site were made public as the Co-Operative revealed ambitious plans to open new stores throughout North West Wales and invest highly in the area.

However, plans to build a single story convenience store received a mixed response with over 100 objections lodged with Conwy Town Council. Some felt that the proposals did not reflect well on a town which is listed at an Unesco World Heritage site.

Conwy Town Council  "strongly objected" and "it would not be in keeping with the historic nature of the town and area".

Locals were also concerned about issues of safety and increased traffic as the main road between the site and the walled town passes through a narrow arch and has no pavement.

The company has invested heavily in the area including a total revamp of the Cooperative store and petrol station near the Marine in Old Colwyn.
