Plans to build a new Cooperative store in close promixity to Conwy Castle is dividing the community today.
As discussed in length on social media, the company has proposed building one of its new shops on the land which for many years was Billington Garage.
Many residents were furious about the state of the property once the garage closed back in 2007 and it remained a derelict eyesore for many years.
Plans to revitalise the site were made public quite recently as the Cooperative revealed ambitious plans to open new stores throughout North West Wales and invest highly in the area. Recent developments included total revamp of the Cooperative store and petrol station near the Marine in Old Colwyn.
However, plans to build a single story convenience store has received a mixed response with over 100 objections lodged with Conwy Town Council. Some feel that the proposals do not reflect well on a town which is listed at an Unesco World Heritage site.
Conwy Town Council has "strongly objected" and "it would not be in keeping with the historic nature of the town and area".
Locals are also concerned about issues of safety and increased traffic as the main road between the site and the walled town passes through a narrow arch and has no pavement.
In paper's lodged on the Conwy County Borough Council website, the application from Cadnant Planning says it has 'considered that the design of the new building has taken consideration of all key viewpoints and that the scheme will preserve and enhance the character of the area and the setting of heritage assets'.
Conwy County Borough Council are due to give their verdict on the proposals and plans in due course.
