North Wales Police is taking part in a national campaign aimed at encouraging young and newly qualified drivers to make safer choices on the roads.

Operation Spotlight Young Drivers will run over the next two weeks, with officers from the force’s Roads Crime Unit speaking to young motorists about some of the biggest risks they face.

The campaign will focus on the so-called Fatal Five – drink and drug driving, speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and driving in a way that puts other people at risk.

Officers will take a three-part approach, combining engagement and education with positive recognition of responsible driving and enforcement where dangerous or unlawful behaviour is identified.

North Wales Police says enforcement could range from advice and education through to prosecution, depending on the circumstances.

Sergeant Simon Hughes, from the Roads Crime Unit, says young drivers can face particular risks because of their lack of experience, despite the freedom that having a licence provides.

The force says its figures show drivers aged between 17 and 25 account for 14 per cent of its drink-drive arrests and 29 per cent of positive drug wipes.

Police are also asking parents, families and communities to talk to young drivers about the risks and the importance of making safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel.

The campaign comes as North Wales Police says it wants to reduce serious collisions and deaths on the region’s roads, while helping young drivers understand that having a licence also brings responsibility towards passengers and other road users.
