Seagulls fly to the top in 4-2 thriller with Llanfair

Mitch Bryant scored two goals and was unlucky not to have a third as the Seagulls made it back to back league wins with a 4-2 home victory over Llanfair United that lifted them into the top 10 of the JD Cymru North table.

The Bay were 2-0 up inside 22 minutes through Bryant and Sion Edwards, but Llanfair replied with two goals from Gethin Wyn Jones to ledvel the scores at half-time.

Colwyn Bay regrouped at and dominated much of the second half before securing the points with two goals in the last 15 minutes from Bryant again and Tom McCready.

It was a perfect with goal after just four minutes as Alex Downes and Damien Ketley set up the chance to Mitch Bryant to flick home the first and 18 minutes later Sion Edwards, who had shot just wide, rifled an angled shot from the left into the top right hand corner of the net to put Seagulls two up.

Llanfair pulled one back with a header from a corner on 28 minutes and it needed a strong hand from Andy Coughlin to a turn a shot from Llamfair's Matt Bumford onto the crossbar before the visitors stunned the Seagulls with an equaliser on 43 minutes.

It came from a Bay free kick in the Llanfair half, which they tried to play short, but lost possession and the visitors broke away for Gethin Jones to get his second of the game.

Before that Mitch Bryant had broken clear and rounded the keeper, but from a narrow angled put his shot into the side-netting.

The second half was pretty much one way traffic and Mitch Bryant looked to have regained the lead with a curling shot from the edge of the area that dipped over the keeper, hit the inside of the post and appeared to drop down over the line before the keeper kicked it away.

Colwyn Bay thought it was a goal, but with no signal from his assistant the referee waved play on.

Mitch Bryant again hit the side-netting after rounding the keeper for a second time, but he made amends on 79 minutes when clever footwork got him past a defender inside the area and his shot found the far corner of the net to put Bay 3-2 up.

Five minutes later Tom McCready sealed victory with Bay's fourth goal, rifling in a snap shot into the bottom corner from just outside the area.

Mitch Bryant was awarded the SoccerMillion Man of the Match and believes he is currently in his best position after being switched into a more central attacking role following the hamstring injury to Joe Chaplin.

"I definitely prefer to play as an out and out centre forward because I feel that is my best position," he says "If I'm asked to play out wide I'll try and do a job there, but I certainly feel more at home in the middle."

That is three goals in two games for the former Runcorn Linnets man and he says: "I've always had faith in my own ability to score goals and with the quality we have in the side we are always going to create chances."

Should he have had a third?

"I thought so," he agreed. "Funnily enough I scored an identical one to that in the pre-match warm-up. I thought it was over the line before the keeper kicked it away, but that's one of those things.

"It would have been nice to have had a hat-trick, but I'm more than happy with two goals and the three points.

"We took our foot off the gas a bit after going 2-0 up, but we had a good chat with each other at half-time and I thought with our second half performance we deserved the win.

"There was probably two or three of us could have got Man of the Match in at second half, but my two goals as obviously swung it for me and its nice to get the recognition."

Manager Craig Hogg was not happy at his side throwing away a 2-0 lead in that first half, but added: "I thought we showed unbelievable character in the second half when perhaps other teams might have lost their way a little bit, and the lads deserve a lot of credit for that.

"It was very warm out there, but they've stuck at it and once we started to show our quality and had worn them down, I felt there was only going to be one winner."

He added: "Mitch Bryant deservedly won Man of the match for his two goals, but everyone played their part and with Daz Thornton unavailable I thought 17-year-old Kian Owen came in and did a great job."

Ash Seddon also came on for the last couple of minutes for his first team debut.
