Speak up and make change, say sight loss charity

People with sight loss across North Wales are being encouraged to speak up and help shape local services as part of a new community initiative.

Vision Support is inviting people who are blind or partially sighted and live within the Betsi Cadwaladr area to get involved in its Local Action Group – a forum designed to give those with lived experience a stronger voice.

The group meets quarterly and offers a welcoming space for individuals to share their views, raise concerns and influence how services are developed locally. No prior experience is needed, with organisers stressing that enthusiasm and a desire to make a difference are what matter most.

Each session focuses on themes suggested by participants. Upcoming discussions will centre on access to sports and leisure, exploring how inclusive facilities are and what barriers people may face, as well as accessible voting and the challenges experienced during elections.

Organisers say there is no pressure to attend every meeting, allowing people to get involved as much or as little as they wish.

Meetings are held at a venue within easy reach of public transport, just a short walk from a railway station and close to a bus stop. Attendees are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to ensure sessions can begin promptly. A light lunch and refreshments are provided.

The initiative comes as Vision Support approaches its 150th year, continuing its long-standing mission to raise awareness of vision impairment and improve independence and wellbeing for people who are blind or partially sighted across North East Wales and Cheshire.

A spokesperson said the organisation is committed to working closely with the community to ensure its services reflect real needs.

“People with lived experience are at the heart of everything we do,” they said. “We believe our services should be shaped by the people who use them, and we are always looking for ways to improve and develop what we offer.”

In addition to the Local Action Group, the charity provides a wide range of support, including social groups, activities, volunteering opportunities and fundraising initiatives.
