A campaign to raise a bronze statue of Terry Jones, on the promenade in his hometown in Colwyn Bay, has now surpassed £100,000.
Sally Jones, his daughter, who is leading A Python On The Prom fundraiser with her brother Bill and Conwy Arts Trust, supported by Conwy County Borough Council, said: “It’s amazing, we have had such an overwhelming response from everyone and to have gone past £100,000, makes it all seem very real! When we add in our sales of campaign t- shirts we are now only £15,000 away from our £120,000 target!
“Our t-shirts have been selling incredibly well and we’ve been sending them all over the world from Iceland to New Zealand and we want to build a wall of selfies of supporters in their t-shirts and would love anyone who has one to post it on social media and tag the campaign #apythonontheprom - We want everyone to see how much love there really is for Terry.”
Since the appeal was launched in early September, support for the statue, which will be raised on Colwyn Bay promenade, has come in from all of the remaining members of Monty Python, fans and friends of Terry from all over the world.
Proud Welsh musician Cerys Matthews, close friend of Terry and fellow Film Director Sara Sugarman, actor Stephen Mangan, writer and comedian David Baddiel and actress Joely Richardson have most recently put their support behind the campaign.
David Baddiel, said of the Python alumnus: “Terry was a great performer and director and writer. I totally support the idea of him having a statue in Colwyn Bay, both as a comedian and as a half-Welshman!”
Sally added: “We are so close to our total, that we are really hopeful that we will be able to unveil the statue next Summer in Colwyn Bay with a big party on the beach!”
