North Wales Police are once again supporting Stephen Lawrence Day this year to commemorate the life of Stephen Lawrence and reflect on how policing has changed because of his story.

Stephen Lawrence was murdered on the 22nd April 1993 in a racially motivated attack. Five suspects were named but all were acquitted. A public enquiry was launched and in 1999 the Macpherson report was published.

This report has led to many changes within the police , such as the target to make the police a more representative workforce and the creation of the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct).

The force states: "We are committed to continue to remember Stephen’s story each year. We will educate younger generations of our police force and the community to understand the importance of how Stephen’s murder changed the face of policing forever.

"This year, PC Amit Patel is working with charity Show Racism the Red Card, Wrexham Football Club and 14 schools from the Wrexham area on workshops which will educate young people about racism and the story of Stephen Lawrence.

"Our Police Cadets will also be taking part in an online event to learn about the story of Stephen Lawrence.

"Stephen’s story and the Macpherson report have shown us the importance of striving for a representative police force that reflects all members of our diverse communities in North Wales and we continue to make this a priority."
