Sunshine returns to North Wales after chilly June start

After a week of rain, strong winds and below-average temperatures, forecasters say a welcome change is on the way for North West Wales and the coast.

The Met Office is forecasting a marked improvement in conditions from the weekend, with high pressure building across the UK and bringing warmer temperatures, lighter winds and more sunshine to areas including Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy.

Saturday is expected to mark the beginning of the change as high pressure starts to become more influential and pushes the jet stream further north. While some cloud and the odd shower remain possible, conditions should become increasingly settled through the weekend and into the start of next week.

For much of the North Wales coast, temperatures are expected to rise into the high teens and low 20s by Sunday and Monday. Coastal locations are likely to remain a little cooler than inland areas because of sea breezes and the relatively cool Irish Sea, but conditions should feel significantly more pleasant than they have for much of June so far.

North East Wales is expected to see some of the highest temperatures in the region, with forecasts suggesting highs of around 21C to 23C by Monday. While temperatures in western areas are likely to be a degree or two lower, the warmer air should gradually spread across Anglesey and the rest of the North West Wales coast as the new week begins.

The improvement follows what has been a disappointing start to the month. Meteorologists say the main culprit has been the position of the jet stream, which has been sitting further south than would normally be expected in early summer.

That has allowed a series of Atlantic weather systems to track across Wales, bringing frequent spells of rain, blustery conditions and temperatures that have often struggled to reach seasonal averages. The effect has been felt particularly strongly across western and north-western parts of Wales, where exposure to Atlantic weather systems tends to be greatest.

While some earlier forecasts hinted at the possibility of heatwave conditions developing this weekend, those expectations have since been scaled back. Instead, forecasters are now expecting a shorter spell of settled and pleasantly warm weather rather than exceptional heat.

Even so, after a chilly and unsettled opening to June, the prospect of sunshine and temperatures above 20C will come as welcome news for residents, visitors and businesses along the North Wales coast.

The Met Office’s longer-range outlook suggests temperatures could remain around or slightly above average into the second half of June, although there is still the possibility of occasional showers and more changeable weather returning at times.
