A group of 8 walkers recently took on three of the highest mountains in Wales to raise funds for their local hospice.
On Saturday 3rd September, the group led by Anelu Aim Higher set off to conquer the Welsh 3 Peaks: a brand new walking event for St David’s Hospice. The Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge is made up of three of the highest and most iconic mountains in Wales: Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan.
Traditionally, walkers would start with Snowdon as it is the highest peak and arguably the most difficult ascent, they would then make their way to Cadair Idris before finishing at Pen y Fan. However, this challenge saw the route being reversed, where they were able to complete the challenge on home turf, at the top of Snowdon.
Starting their ascent to Pen y Fan at 3.30am, the walkers climbed up through the thick fog in total darkness to reach the summit. They then travelled to Dolgellau where the rain failed to dampen anyone’s spirits and they were rewarded with spectacular views from the top of Cadair Idris.
The final challenge saw the group make their way up the PYG track where the breath-taking views were sadly interrupted as they approached the summit by the fast-approaching clouds. Thankfully on the descent the group were able to appreciate the views for a final time as the challenge came to an end and they approached Llanberis.
St David’s Hospice supporter Elen Elias told us what the challenge meant to her:
“I took part in the Welsh 3 Peaks challenge because I think the world of the hospice. The way they help and serve so many people is truly inspiring. Personally, they cared for my father in the last week of his life, as well as looking after us as a family.
“The Welsh 3 peaks was a challenge, but a lovely group of people and 2 great guides made it a fun day!”
Keri McKie, Gwynedd and Anglesey Area Fundraiser said: “The Welsh 3 Peaks was a huge success, with such an inspiring group of participants, taking on each mountain like it was their first.
"Despite the mixed weather conditions faced throughout the day they made excellent time; I’ve never seen a group walk down Snowdon so quickly! It was a pleasure to join these participants and hear what St David’s Hospice means to them all.
“Thank you once again to Anelu Aim Higher.”
