Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed the installation of a new community defibrillator at a Conwy school and thanked local councillors who helped deliver the project.
The new equipment has been installed at the entrance of Ysgol Llandrillo-yn-Rhos in Rhos on Sea and was funded by Bay of Colwyn Councillors Glenys Baker and David Howcroft, who used their local ward allowance to purchase and install it.
They also enlisted the support of Conwy County Borough Councillor James Lusted, the Chair of the school's Governing Body, and Headteacher Gaynor Highcock to deliver the project.
Mr. Millar said: “I have long been calling for the delivery of defibrillators in all major public buildings and schools, so I am extremely pleased that one has been installed at the school.
“I thank Cllrs Baker and David Howcroft for their very generous donation and for working with Cllr Lusted and the Headteacher to make it happen. .
“Roughly 1 in 4 people are affected by heart and circulatory diseases and so often conditions such as heart attacks happen unexpectedly. Having this defibrillator at the school will provide pupils, staff and parents, and the local community, with reassurance should the worst happen.
“Combined with the immediate application of CPR, a defibrillator is the only form of treatment for someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest and if used within 3-5 minutes of a person collapsing will increase their survival chances from 6% to 74%.”
Cllr James Lusted said: “It is very reassuring to have this piece of equipment available at the school and I thank Cllrs Baker and Howcroft for using their ward allowance to fund it.”
