Crest helps to give your old power tools a new lease of life

Colwyn Bay and Llandudno Junction based charity Crest Cooperative are asking people to dig out their old, unloved power tools to give them another chance to be useful.

If you’ve got an old drill or jigsaw taking up space, make use of the fortnightly recycling collections in Conwy County so they can be repaired or recycled instead.

Local charity Crest Cooperative has been working with Conwy County Borough Council for 20 years to improve recycling rates and give items a new lease of life.

Crest’s latest community scheme will see old tools cleaned, repaired and tested before being added to a tools lending library at their Llandudno Junction shop. Borrowers can choose the item they need, pay a small refundable deposit and take away the item to use, returning it by the due date to get their deposit back.

“Most tools aren’t used regularly – how often do you need a wallpaper stripper or an angle grinder? So it makes sense to borrow items instead of spending money on new goods that use precious resources,” explains Rod Williams, Managing Director at Crest.

“Donated tools we can repair will go into our library, and those that can’t be fixed will be used for spares or recycled.”

“There are 527 million unwanted electrical items in homes across the UK,” says Cllr Greg Robbins, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation. “By using the Crest pink bag collection, you can save space at home and put items back into use, which makes good environmental sense.”

Crest also has an electricals repair workshop, which gives employment and volunteering opportunities to local people.

Extra pink bags can be collected from the Crest shops at Llandudno Junction and Colwyn Bay, or call 01492 575337 for delivery. Find out more: www.conwy.gov.uk/recycling and www.crestcooperative.co.uk.
