Heavy rain and winds break into a blustery Friday for region

North Wales is experiencing another spell of unsettled weather, with strong winds and heavy rain from Storm Austen today (Friday 23 October), followed by further downpours as Storm Boelo approaches over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for wind across parts of Wales, with the risk of travel disruption, difficult conditions on exposed routes and large waves along the coast.

Storm Austen is expected to bring the strongest winds to western and southern parts of the UK, although North Wales will also feel its effects. Gusts of between 45 and 55 miles per hour are possible across parts of the region, with exposed coastal locations particularly vulnerable.

The weather is expected to remain unsettled on Saturday, with rain spreading in from the west and winds strengthening again later in the day.

Storm Boelo, a separate weather system, is forecast to bring its most severe conditions to Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England. However, North Wales could still see further heavy showers and blustery conditions as the system moves through.

Forecast charts indicate gusts could reach around 68 miles per hour on Anglesey by Sunday morning, with winds exceeding 50 miles per hour possible in other exposed locations. The precise strength and distribution of the winds may change as the forecast develops.

The Met Office has warned that strong winds can bring fallen branches, damage to buildings and delays to road, rail and ferry services. Coastal areas could also experience large waves and dangerous conditions, particularly around exposed promenades, sea fronts and cliff paths.

People are being advised to secure loose items outside their homes, including bins and garden furniture, and to check travel arrangements before setting out. Anyone visiting the coast should keep well back from breaking waves and cliff edges.

Although Storm Boelo is expected to have its greatest impact further north, the weekend forecast remains changeable across Wales, with further rain and strong winds possible.

The latest warnings and forecasts are available from the Met Office.
