Ysgol Babanod Llanfairfechan could move towards becoming a fully Welsh-medium school under plans being considered by Conwy County Borough Council.
The council’s Education Service is asking councillors for permission to consult on changing the school’s language category to Category 3 – Welsh Medium.
The school has been gradually increasing its Welsh-language provision for almost 20 years and has been designated as a T2 school since September 2022, meaning it has been transitioning towards bilingual education.
Conwy says the school is now in a position to progress towards becoming fully Welsh medium, in line with the authority’s Welsh in Education Strategic Plan.
The proposal will first be considered by the Education and Skills Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday, September 22nd, before recommendations are taken to the council’s Cabinet on October 6th.
If permission is given, a public consultation is expected to begin in late October. Views from parents, staff and other stakeholders and members of the Llanfairfechan community would then be gathered before the responses are reported back to councillors in spring next year.
Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Aaron Wynne, said consulting the community would help the authority determine the best way forward.
The proposed change is part of Conwy’s wider plan to increase the number of children and young people receiving their education through the medium of Welsh.
No final decision on changing the school’s language category has yet been made.
