New website to boost confidence ahead of May election

A new official website designed to give voters clear and impartial information ahead of the Senedd election on 7 May has been launched today.

The platform, Vote.wales, has been developed by the Electoral Management Board for Wales, which sits within the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru. It is the first website of its kind in Wales and aims to act as a single, trusted source of information about the election.

The site brings together practical guidance on how to register to vote, how to cast a ballot at a polling station, and how postal and proxy voting arrangements work. Proxy voting allows a person to nominate someone else to vote on their behalf if they are unable to attend in person.

The website also outlines what accessibility support voters can expect when attending a polling station.

A postcode search function enables voters to check which of Wales’ 16 new constituencies they will be voting in and where their local polling station is located. Following the close of nominations — the deadline by which candidates must formally confirm they are standing — the site will also list the political parties and independent candidates contesting each constituency.

As well as practical voting advice, the website explains how the Senedd operates and what responsibilities it holds.

It sets out the difference between the Senedd, which makes laws for Wales, and the Welsh Government, which is formed from members of the Senedd and is responsible for delivering devolved services such as health and education.

It also clarifies which policy areas remain the responsibility of the UK Parliament, including defence and foreign affairs.

Further developments are planned in the coming weeks. In a first for Welsh elections, voters will soon be able to access detailed accessibility information about their individual polling stations. Political parties and independent candidates will also be able to upload digital versions of their election leaflets, allowing voters to compare policies and priorities in one place.

After polling day, the website will publish the full official results.

Shereen Williams, Chief Executive of the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru, said the new platform was intended to strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.

“An important election is coming on 7 May, and vote.wales is the place to go to find out all about it,” she said. “We know that people across Wales are looking forward to making their voices heard at this election, but many people don’t feel they have all the information they need before they go and vote. If you have questions about this election, then head to vote.wales. Voting confidence starts here.”

The website operates under regulations governing the Welsh Elections Information Platform and is intended to provide impartial, factual guidance as voters prepare to cast their ballots in May.
