RGC began their Super Rugby Cymru campaign with a 34-25 defeat away to Newport, despite showing plenty of attacking threat and creating opportunities throughout the match.
The opening 15 minutes were frantic, with both sides trading penalties and struggling to find space. Billy McBryde put RGC ahead from the tee after Newport had initially taken an early lead.
Newport then struck with a try from Sam Morgan, before RGC responded with a strong spell of pressure which ended with Sam Williams crossing for their first try. McBryde added the conversion to put RGC back in front.
The visitors were given another opportunity when Newport were reduced to 14 men, but RGC were unable to make the extra man count. Instead, an intercepted pass allowed Chay Foster-Smith to race clear for Newport's second try.
Newport continued to apply pressure and, despite being down to 14, added another try through Ethan Phillips shortly before half-time to lead 24-13 at the break.
RGC were then reduced to 14 players themselves early in the second half, and Newport took advantage, with Finlay Baker scoring in the corner following a cross-field kick.
RGC continued to push and eventually got another reward when McBryde finished off a move in the corner. His conversion attempt hit the post, leaving Newport with a 29-18 advantage.
The visitors continued to create chances but a number of handling errors and missed opportunities prevented them from building sustained pressure.
Newport extended their lead when Henry Palmer emerged with a try after the home pack drove over from a lineout.
RGC refused to give up, with Morgan Dryhurst-Jones making a break downfield before being caught, while Newport were later reduced to 14 players again when Sam Morgan was shown a yellow card.
There was still time for RGC to add a late consolation, with Sam Williams crossing for his second try of the afternoon. McBryde converted to make the final score 34-25.
The result will be disappointing for RGC, but there were encouraging passages of play and plenty of attacking intent.
The North Wales side will know that improved execution and decision-making at crucial moments could make a significant difference as the season progresses.
RGC's first home game of the campaign is next Saturday, the 19th of September, when Carmarthen Quins visit Stadiwm Eirias.
