Staying safe at the beach is now within easier reach

People planning a trip to the coast in North Wales this Easter are being urged to stay safe, with new features added to the Met Office Weather App making it easier than ever to check conditions before heading out.

With an unsettled forecast expected over the Bank Holiday weekend, experts say keeping a close eye on the weather will be key—especially for those visiting popular seaside spots across North Wales, from Llandudno to Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.

The updated app now includes detailed beach forecasts and safety advice for around 500 coastal locations across the UK, bringing together tide times, wave heights and key safety information all in one place. The aim is to help families and visitors make better decisions before and during their time at the beach.

Working alongside the RNLI, the Met Office has also built in practical safety guidance, including advice on rip currents, wind conditions and general beach safety—something particularly important along the North Wales coast, where conditions can change quickly.

The new features mean users can check when high and low tides are due, see expected wave conditions, and access simple tips to stay safe in the water. More updates are expected in the coming weeks, including sea temperature readings and hourly wave forecasts.

Safety experts say the changes come at an important time of year. While spring sunshine can draw crowds to the coast, sea temperatures remain cold, increasing the risk of cold water shock. Visitors are being encouraged to choose lifeguarded beaches where possible and to swim between the red and yellow flags.

Advice also includes the reminder to “float to live” if you get into difficulty in the water—tilting your head back, staying calm and calling for help. In an emergency, people should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

For communities and visitors across North Wales, where the coastline is a major attraction during holidays, the updated app offers a simple way to stay informed and safe. As more people head to the seaside this Easter, officials say a few quick checks could make all the difference to enjoying the coast safely.
