A goal from Julian Williams on 76 minutes put Colwyn Bay into the third round of the JD Welsh Cup with a hard fought 1-0 victory at Nantlle Vale.

With Mitch Bryant unavailable, Joe Chaplin made his first start in seven games following injury and helped his side have the better of the first half on a heavy pitch.

He had an shot well blocked by a defender and saw another another effort beaten away for a corner by the home keeper.

Julian Williams and Damian Ketley also had shots blocked and Williams failed to find the net with a couple of headed chances  from crosses by Alex  Downes and Sion Edwards.

Nantlle Vale's only threat came from a close range shot which was well blocked away for a corner by Matty Russell.

The second half saw the home side came out and have a go, with Matt Russell having to clear a header off the line from a corner while another couple of efforts went  narrowly wide.

Colwyn Bay, however, finished the stronger with Tom McCready unlucky to see a bending shot hit the post, while Chaplin fired a good chance over the bar  and Toby Jones had a shot saved by the keeper.

But the winner finally came on 76 minutes and Julian Williams scored it with a swerving 25 yard shot hit with the outside of his left foot.

The home keeper then saved with his legs after a great run  into the area by Sion Edwards and then made a good double save from Toby Jones to prevent Bay increasing their lead.

Seagulls boss Craig Hogg commented: "I'm disappointed we didn't score more goals from the amount of chances we created, but this was always going to be another tricky away game on a heavy pitch after all the rain and the emphasis was to come here and do a professional job - and think everybody did that.

"Fair play to Nantlle Vale they came out and had a go at us, without really threatening us too much, and we've created a lot of chances that could have put the game to bed.

"It was good that Joe Chaplin got  70 minutes under his belt after coming back from injury and Toby Jones also got a little run out at the end and came through that well after his injury, so that was pleasing."
