Domestic abuse support organisations across North Wales are reminding victims that help is available throughout the World Cup as evidence shows incidents can rise during major football tournaments.
Research by Lancaster University found domestic abuse incidents increased by 38 per cent when England lost a World Cup match and by 26 per cent when England won or drew. Reports also rose by 11 per cent on the following day.
Support services say the figures highlight the importance of ensuring victims know where to turn if they need help.
Across North Wales, support is available through the North Wales Domestic Abuse Unit (DASU), which provides help for adults, children and young people affected by domestic abuse. The service operates across Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham.
In Gwynedd and Anglesey, support is available through Gorwel, while people experiencing abuse can also contact the Live Fear Free Helpline, the Welsh Government’s 24-hour domestic abuse and sexual violence support service.
North Wales Police also works closely with partner agencies to protect victims and pursue offenders.
Campaigners stress that football itself is not responsible for domestic abuse. Abuse is caused by the actions of perpetrators, but major sporting events can act as a trigger for existing abusive behaviour.
Anyone in immediate danger should call 999. Those unable to speak can use the Silent Solution by dialling 999 and pressing 55 when prompted.
Support is available 24 hours a day through the Live Fear Free helpline on 0808 80 10 800, by text on 07860 077333 or via online chat.
