£1.30 nightly charge to stay coming to North Wales hotels

A new law might add £1.30 per night to hotel stays in North Wales to raise funds for tourist towns and villages.

The legislation, dubbed 'The Tourism Tax', is expected to be passed today thanks to Plaid Cymru supporting the Welsh Government vote.

The Welsh Conservatives say they plan to scrap the supplement if they win the next election at the Senedd.

Hostel and campsite visitors will pay 75p per night while other accommodations will be charged the higher rate, excluding children under 18.

Plans for a tourism levy were proposed by Labour in their 2021 manifesto, intended to address concerns about tourism impact in Welsh communities.

The charges, if adopted by individual councils, would be implemented at the earliest in 2027.
