Eleven public toilets across Conwy county have been refurbished or repaired following a £134,467 investment, improving facilities for residents and visitors.
The work has been funded through the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund and includes decorating, replacing locks, doors and windows, as well as a full refurbishment of the toilets at the Great Orme Visitor Centre.
Public conveniences in Trefriw and Ysbyty Ifan have also been upgraded and are now ready to be handed over to their communities to run and maintain.
Councillor Mike Priestley, Conwy's Cabinet Member for Environment, Roads and Infrastructure, said the funding had allowed the council to make “meaningful improvements” to facilities valued by local residents, businesses and visitors.
He said the community-run facilities in Trefriw and Ysbyty Ifan would also provide an opportunity for local people to take responsibility for their future operation and maintenance.
The investment comes as Conwy Council continues to face significant financial pressures. The authority has previously considered reducing the number of council-run public toilets, prompting criticism from some communities and councillors.
The council has since explored alternative ways of keeping facilities available, including its Community Toilet Scheme, where participating businesses allow members of the public to use their toilets. The authority has also worked with town and community councils to support the continued operation of some facilities.
Public toilet provision is particularly important in Conwy, given the county's substantial visitor economy and attractions including Llandudno, the Great Orme, Conwy and the Conwy Valley.
The council says maintaining facilities is also important for older people, families and people with disabilities, while vandalism, anti-social behaviour and ongoing maintenance costs add to the challenge of keeping them open.
For now, however, the focus is on the improvements being delivered.
The council says the substantial investment will help ensure the 11 facilities are in better condition and able to continue serving communities and visitors across Conwy.
