Anglesey farmer and his cattle have lucky escape on A55

North Wales Police have thanked patient motorists and local farmers after a cattle transporter overturned on the A55 near to Colwyn Bay earlier today.

A Toyota Hilux pulling a trailer flipped over, blocking both lanes, causing minor injuries to the Anglesey driver who was heading to the market in St. Asaph.

The scene was managed by local farmers and emergency services to safely transfer the animals which were all unhurt in the incident.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "Due to the mechanics of the collision and the trailer on its side, we, along with the Armed Alliance and Drone Unit worked with the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Traffic Wales, Hough Green Recovery and a local vet to ensure the safety of the animals remained paramount.

"This meant that the carriageway had to be closed whilst the trailer was manoeuvred and the animals transferred safely to another trailer.

"We understand that this would have caused disruption to the surrounding area and delays for members of the public, but this was sadly unavoidable.

"We'd like to thank the local farming community who bolstered together to attend the scene, in order to assist in safely managing the cattle and transferring them safely on the carriageway to another trailer, without whom the carriageway would have been closed for a lot longer.

"All animals were assessed at the scene and no major concerns highlighted.

"We appreciate that this caused major delays but we thank the local and farming community so that we could open the road as soon as we could."

The road was reopened at 1pm following lengthy tailbacks and gridlock on many roads.
