Creative Arts students at Coleg Llandrillo are celebrating after their end-of-year digital graphics project won a silver award at an international design awards competition in Los Angeles.

The 22 students from the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus were awarded silver for their yearbook in the 'Print and Self-Promotion' category by an international jury at the 'International Design Awards' (IDA) in California, beating off stiff competition from around the world.

The college's Creative Arts' department and its students now have the 'International Design Awards' full set: a silver to go with the gold, bronze and 'honorable mention' awards already achieved in only five years!

The juries examined thousands of cutting-edge designs and innovative products from around the world, which all vied for the top prizes at this prestigious ceremony, which, in recent years, has risen to become one of the leading design awards in America.

This annual competition recognises, honours and promotes design visionaries and uncovers emerging talents in architecture, interior, product, graphic and fashion design on a global level.

The Coleg Llandrillo students developed their digital skills using Adobe Photoshop software on Apple Macintosh iMac computers. They captured images using scanners and digital cameras and created digital images direct to the computer screen via drawing tablets.

Robin Williams, programme area manager for Creative Arts at Coleg Llandrillo, said: "This a superb achievement by our Art and Design Foundation Studies' students who all contributed to the yearbook, with much of the content being created during the first Coronavirus lockdown.

College tutor Dewi Hughes, who is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers with 40 years commercial graphic design and education experience, added: "Showcasing our creativity on the world stage is a quality experience for our students, ahead of their university experience and the world of employment.

"I would like to congratulate the whole team of students for their inspirational project. It has reaffirmed the international recognition for Creative Arts that we have here at Coleg Llandrillo."
