Apparently, rugby isn’t a priority sport in North Wales… well try telling that to the 6,300 rugby fans who attended the RGC Junior Cup Finals held over 4 days at Stadiwm CSM in Colwyn Bay this May Day Bank Holiday Weekend.
Boys and Girls aged under 12 to under 16 from across the RGC region competed in Cup, Plate and Bowl finals which were the finale of months of fixtures held at rugby clubs far and wide before coming together for the season ending spectacular.
Teams who enter receive pitch side behavior workshops, are required to provide a minimum level 1 referee to officiate games and must also have level 1 or level 2 coaches on their sidelines as well.
Neutral referees are provided for all finals with approximately 60% being students from Grwp Llandrillo Menai. This collaborative approach across the WRU’s RGC Community Dept, community clubs, educational establishments, the North Wales Rugby Union Referees Society and many more showcased what can be achieved when there is a common goal for all to aim for.
The figures are astounding with a total of 1019 players from 40 teams representing 15 clubs and 8 girls hubs playing in 20 finals across 4 days. In addition to these some 5,300 spectators came along to cheer on their teams and created an amazing atmosphere.
Social media figures have also been staggering with over 1.5 million views on Instagram and Facebook in the last seven days showcasing the interest from people of all ages and from as far away as USA and Australia.
“In terms of participation numbers, rugby is a growing sport in North Wales, and I think this weekend has proved that point” said RGC General Manager, Alun Pritchard. “The atmosphere across all finals was amazing, it brought together clubs from throughout the region and showcased the best that rugby and sport in general has to offer.
“With a little more investment, we could really see the rugby landscape across the region take a massive leap forward. I hope this weekend, especially with the social media engagement can act as a springboard for that investment.”
The RGC Junior Cup is sponsored by St David’s College without whose support the competition and season finale would not have been able to take place.
