Colwyn Bay swept into the last 16 of the JD Welsh Cup with a 5-1 goal display against Ruthin Town.

Mitch Bryant scored twice, with Cai Owen and substitutes Danny Edwards and Jack Higgins also on target.

Both sides had chances in a tightly-fought first half, with the two keepers making good saves, but  Bay goals either side of half-time opened the game up.

Cai Owen got the first right on the interval with a left-footed drive and a minute into the second half Bryant headed the first of his two goals.

His second came on 65 minutes before Danny Edwards hit the goal of the game with a volley into the top corner,

Ruthin, who unfortunately had Rhys Rowlands stretched off with a serious-looking injury, pulled a goal back through Jamie Cumming on 88 minutes, but Jack Higgins came off the bench to score Bay's fifth from Sion Edwards' pass.

Manager Craig Hogg commented: "On the back of last week's performance and result at Airbus, there was a real desire to improve.

"Both sides have had good chances in the first half, but Cai Owen took his goal well just before half-time and we took control after Mitch's goal just after the break.

"The fitness battle was won in the first half and people got through various energy levels and pain thresholds in the second half to make sure we won the tie."

Looking ahead to Monday's fourth round draw, Craig added: "Its a lottery where we are going to be and who we going to play.

"The important thing is that we are through and our desire and appetite is to go deep into the competition - we'd love to do that.

"Whoever we get in the next round the focus from us will be to deliver a performance that our fans can be proud of again."
