A Police Officer based in Blaenau Ffestiniog has raised almost £3,500 towards a charity where he volunteers.

PC Gutun Lake and two of his friends recently completed a distance of almost 1,000 miles cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise funds for the Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team.

PC Lake, who lives locally and who has been a volunteer with the mountain rescue team for seven years, decided to take on the challenge with two of his friends as it was something they’d always wanted to do.

He said: “We’ve talked about completing the route for a while so we decided to just go for it, but to raise money for a worthy cause in the process. So we took advantage of the good weather just after the travel restrictions were lifted last month so the timing was just perfect.

“Miraculously, we didn’t get one single puncture between us the whole time which is a miracle when you think of the miles we covered.

“We were also extremely lucky with the weather and it only rained on the last day.

“I enjoy the outdoors and being in the mountains so volunteering with the local mountain rescue team was just something completely natural for me. I wanted to do something to help raise funds for the team that I’m lucky enough to be part of.

“The trip took 12 days to complete but would not have been possible without the support of our family, friends and colleagues. We’d like to thank them all for their encouragement.”

PC Lake joined North Wales Police four years ago and is a response officer based at Blaenau Ffestiniog Police Station.

The Abergalslyn Mountain Rescue Team operate from Porthmadog and provide a search and rescue service, not just on the mountains, but covering the whole of North Waest Wales, including urban and rural areas and along the coast of north Wales.

Further details regarding the team are available via their website.
