Campaign petition demands fair funding for Towyn

Calls for greater investment in the North Wales seaside resort of Towyn are gathering momentum after a local business owner launched a petition demanding improved infrastructure and more funding for the area.

The campaign has been started by Luke Knightly, who runs Knightly’s Amusements, one of the town’s best-known family attractions.

His petition calls for more investment to improve facilities and infrastructure in the popular tourist destination, which draws thousands of visitors each year.

The initiative has now been backed by Darren Millar, the Member of the Senedd for Clwyd West, who says the resort has been overlooked despite its importance to the local tourism economy.

Mr Millar, who grew up in Towyn and previously served on Towyn and Kinmel Bay Town Council before being elected to the Senedd, said he fully supports the campaign.

“As someone who was brought up in Towyn, I fully support the calls for more investment in Towyn,” he said.

The seaside town, located between Rhyl and Kinmel Bay, has long been a traditional holiday destination with caravan parks, amusement arcades and beach attractions forming a major part of its economy.

Mr Millar said he had been pressing for improvements in several areas, including securing additional funding for the town through regeneration schemes. He recently proposed that Conwy County Borough Council designate Towyn, Pensarn and parts of Kinmel Bay for additional financial support through the UK Government’s Pride in Place programme.

He has also been lobbying Network Rail to replace the ageing bridge at the bottom of Sandbank Road with a more accessible structure that better reflects the needs of an area heavily dependent on tourism.

In addition, the MS has challenged the Welsh Government to invest in improvements to flood defences along the coastline in Towyn and nearby Belgrano, arguing that upgrading their appearance would make the area more attractive to both residents and visitors.

“Towyn deserves its fair share of investment from the local council, and from the Welsh and UK Governments, but it is currently being let down,” he said.

“I therefore encourage people to sign Mr Knightly’s petition and help secure the investment Towyn both needs and deserves.”

Towyn has faced a number of challenges over the years, including coastal flooding and concerns about the condition of some infrastructure, despite remaining a major visitor destination along the North Wales coast.

Supporters of the petition hope the campaign will highlight the importance of the resort to the regional tourism economy and encourage authorities to prioritise improvements that could help secure its future as a thriving seaside destination.
