Neil Coverley has been named as the new chairman of the Colwyn Bay Football Club.
The appointment. following the sad passing of Bill Murray, was confirmed at last night's board meeting.
From watching the Bay as a boy, the former centre back went on to play for and captaining the club after starting his playing career at Crewe Alexandra, and was voted Player of the Season in the 2006/7 campaign when Colwyn Bay reached the UniBond Division One play-offs.
After a successful spell as player and coach at Llandudno, he re-joined the Bay as part of Alan Morgan's backroom staff and became assistant manager in September 2018 when Craig Hogg took over the hot seat.
After accepting the club's invitation to become Director of Football, he joined the board of directors in 2019, and since then he has become a key figure in the day to day running of the club.
He will now relinquish the post of Director of Football to concentrate on his new role.
Neil commented: "To be made chairman of this Football Club is something in which I take enormous pride.
"It is just a shame that it has come under sad circumstances with Bill passing away two weeks ago, but I'll ensure all his good work won't be undone.
"Brought up in Old Colwyn and sneaking into Bay games via a broken fence behind the shed end gave me an early indication of what this club means to the community.
"I was fortunate enough to play for and captain this club on many occasions and some of my best non league days were at Llanelian Road.
"Being brought back to the coaching staff then moving to a board member it’s been possibly a natural progression and one I’ve immensely enjoyed. I’ve certainly learnt how much time and effort is put in behind the scenes.
"Since the move back to play in the Welsh structure and the somewhat re- branding of the club we have noticed some remarkable interest and enthusiasm locally. We need to keep that momentum and keep striving to promote and increase.
"None of that would be possible without tireless hours of work that doesn’t get seen and the registered supporters group have been a main catalyst of this.
"I won’t name individuals but each of them bring something to the table and as a club we are so thankful.
"The continued support and backing of Dave and Brian Titchiner is incredible and others at 4 Crosses Construction that help out. Very often each week Brian and work colleagues are up at the ground improving issues that arise come rain or shine, this is invaluable to clubs of our size and again we are so thankful.
"As a club we are in a good place, a competitive first team under the guidance of Craig, an academy going from strength to strength with lots of positive work from Matt Sampson and the coaches and our junior section has doubled with local registered players, thanks to Brian Madden and the tremendous group of volunteers.
"We have so many new faces attending home games. We’ve got a fabulous three year shirt sponsorship with GO2 People (thank you Chris and the team ) and I’ve been privileged to play my part in each of these.
"This is only the beginning and the best part is we will all keep moving forward together. Colwyn Bay FC is a proud member of this wonderful community and I can’t wait to see what the future brings."
