Two first half goals from Alex Downes and Dan Jones saw the Seagulls reach the quarter-finals of the JD Welsh Cup with a 2-0 home win over Barry Town United.

They are now away to Cardiff Met University in February.

Despite facing the strong wind in the first half, Bay controlled much of the play and after Jamie Cummings had a shot deflected narowly wide, they took the lead on 20 minutes when Alex Downes fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net from Tommy Creamer’s cross following a corner.

Udi Akpan should have made it 2-0 but fired over the bar when Tommy Creamer broke one on one with the keeper and squared the ball to him.

Barry keeper Luc Rees saved from Jamie Cummings and Tommy Creamer fired a shot over the bar before Bay doubled their lead five minutes before half-time.

Good attacking play saw Dan Jones play a lovely 1-2 with Udi Akpan and rifled a shot past the keeper.

Udi might have had added a third but his fierce shot struck Callum Sainty square in the face, forcing the Barry player to be substituted.

In the second half Barry tried to get back into the game, but the Bay managed the game well and Joe Smith was never really fully tested.

Sam Hart did well to get his head to one goal-bound shot, while at the other end Udi Akpan brought a fine save from Luc Rees to deny him a goal that his overall play deserved.
