Families across North Wales are being encouraged to embrace the outdoors this summer through the Explore Outside! initiative, which highlights free and low-cost adventures available across the region.

As the summer holidays begin, the campaign aims to help families discover local parks, beaches, woodlands, and green spaces, supporting children's emotional health, wellbeing, and development through outdoor play.

Developed by the North Wales Children's Regional Partnership Board, the Explore Outside! online directory offers a searchable guide to playgrounds, coastal walks, and nature sites, making it easier for families to connect with nature and their local communities.

The Explore Outside! initiative is designed to help families across North Wales find accessible outdoor spaces.

The searchable online directory features a wide range of locations, including playgrounds, adventure play areas, parks, and green spaces. Families can also use the directory to find beaches, coastal walks, woodland trails, and nature sites, as well as open spaces perfect for family games and picnics.

To make the most of the summer holidays, Explore Outside! suggests several strategies for families. Letting children lead the way by choosing where to go can build their confidence and independence. Families can also start close to home, as local parks, beaches, and footpaths can become exciting adventures without the need for long travel.

To keep children engaged, parents can turn the outing into a challenge by spotting wildlife, collecting interesting leaves, or creating a simple treasure hunt. These outdoor adventures also provide a valuable opportunity for family conversations away from screens. Finally, visiting unfamiliar places helps children build adaptability and confidence as they explore somewhere new.

Explore Outside! forms part of the North Wales Emotional Health, Wellbeing and Resilience Framework. This framework supports children, young people, and families by encouraging healthy lifestyles and positive connections with nature.
