Drivers using the Conwy tunnel face delays for the next few weeks as a result of the upgrading and servicing of ventilation systems.
24 hour closures will take place from 19:00 Sunday 21st November through to 07:00 Monday 6th December 2021, firstly westbound then eastbound between Junction 17 and 18.
Works include upgrading the ventilation fans and their monitoring systems. The fans were last upgraded in 2015.
These system help keep tunnel users safe in the event of a fire by blowing heat and smoke away from the incident and any queuing traffic behind. This allows people time to evacuate the tunnel.
Many manhole covers and signs which have reached the end of their service life will also be replaced. During the closure, routine maintenance of life safety systems will also take place.
The project is programmed to take a total of 15 days to complete under overnight closures and a contraflow on the following dates:
Overnight lane closures in both directions on November 21st, 28th and December 5th from 19:00-07:00.
It will be necessary to stop traffic for up to 20 minutes at a time overnight on the dates above to set out, change and remove traffic management safely.
Contractors will be working continuously within the working window to complete the works as quickly as possible.
Temporary signs will be added to the current signage. This will direct motorists to stay on the A55 and advise road users on all connecting routes to expect delays.
Local traffic routes are unsuitable for use as diversion routes. Drivers who leave the A55 to avoid queues will be delayed more due to the congestion they cause on local roads.
